March is Youth Art Month!
Students in Mrs. Godwin’s 3rd-grade classes have been learning about area and perimeter. They used stuffed animals and created a pen for them. Then they found the area and perimeter of their animal’s pen. This was a fun, hands-on way to be the owner of a make-believe pet and determine how much fencing would be needed to make a pen for their animal.

The Media Center sponsored an Jellybean competition during the month of February. Students who visited the library were able to guess how many jellybeans were in the jar. At the end of the competition, the students with the top five guesses each received a bag of the Jellybeans! Congratulations to the following students for their wonderful estimation skills!

March is Youth Art Month, where schools across the nation celebrate visual art education programs and young artists in grades K-12. Join us every day as DES celebrates our own young artists.
Congratulations to the February Viking Students of the Month for each grade level! These students received a certificate and a delicious free KONA Ice! We are so proud of each of you! Thank you, KONA Ice, for making this treat possible for our students.

To celebrate Black History Month, Mrs. Singletary's Kindergartners learned about George Washington Carver and then made peanut butter!
Next week is Read Across America Week, and this year's theme is Celebrating 250 Chapters of America!
We will be celebrating with dress-up days, volunteer readers, and lots of reading at home and at school!
A reading challenge sheet will go home with students on Monday. Students who complete the entire sheet will be entered for a chance to win a $10 gift certificate to the spring book fair!
Join us in the celebration by participating in the dress-up days beginning Monday, March 2!

Using square tiles, Mrs. Umpleby’s 3rd-grade students designed and built animal cages with the correct area to make sure their “animals” didn’t escape. Through this hands-on activity, they learned that area is the space inside a shape and that we can find it by multiplying the length × width.
After building their own enclosure, students walked around the room measuring their classmates’ cages, checking the length and width to calculate each area. So much collaboration, movement, and real-world math thinking happening all at once!
