Mrs. King's class wrapped up their Johnny Appleseed unit by making apple pie in a cup! We started by crushing graham crackers for the base, then added apple filling, whipped cream, and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top. Before tasting, we made predictions about the flavor. After enjoying our tasty treats, we wrote down the steps we took using sequencing words. It was a fun way to celebrate our learning!

Students from Mrs. Crews, Mrs. White, and Mrs. Scott’s class enjoyed participating in STEM projects this week. They tested their bottle flipping abilities by filling four different water bottles with different amounts of candy corn to see how times they could successfully flip their bottles. Finally they became spiders and engineered webs using yarn, cotton, craft sticks and their surroundings to catch plastic insects.

Mrs. Taylor's class wrapped up their Johnny Appleseed unit this week with some "Fun Friday" activities! Students tasted red, yellow, and green apples and chose their favorite. Next, they iced an apple shaped cookie, based on the color they liked best and made a graph to see which color was liked by the most students. The yellow apples won! Last, the class followed a recipe to make crock-pot apple dump cake. Learning is sweet at DES!

Viking Family, We have been eagerly anticipating the return of our students; however, the safety of both our staff and students remains our top priority. Following a reassessment today, we have identified over 130 roads that present challenges for bus navigation or are currently impassable due to debris and obstructions from downed lines. We have been advised it is not safe for our buses to navigate many of our roadways. In addition to this, I-75 is grid locked due to evacuees, and this is a main thoroughfare for our buses. We are actively in communication with Lowndes County officials, Lowndes EMA, and local utility companies, all of whom are working diligently to resolve these issues in our community. We appreciate their tireless work and recognize that it will take more time to clear roadways so we can safely transport students to school. With this in mind, students will return to school following Fall Break on Wednesday, October 16th.
