SEL
What is Social and Emotional Learning?
According to the Committee for Children, SEL is the process of developing self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital to school, work, and life success.
The diagram below is referred to as the “CASEL wheel.” At the center are the five core social and emotional competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. These skills are vital to success in academics, relationships, and employment.
Circling the core competencies are four key settings where students live and grow. School-family-community partnerships are necessary for teaching children social and emotional learning skills. As a school system, we recognize the importance of supporting the "whole child", ensuring each child has the emotional support necessary to succeed in the classroom and in life.
